KRISPY KREME CHALLENGE 2007 A SUCCESS!

January 27, 2007 – RALEIGH, NC.

2400 calories,

12 doughnuts,

4 miles,

In less than 1 hour,

All to benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.

Over 1500 students of N.C. State and members of the Raleigh community came out to support the 3rd Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, a benefit race for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital that is organized entirely by students at N.C. State. The race raised approximately $10,000, surpassing last year’s amount tenfold. To complete the challenge, participants run two miles from the N.C. State Belltower to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace St., eat one dozen donuts, and then run the two miles back to the Belltower in under one hour. Over 700 people competed as challengers, while over 450 people ran the course as casual runners. Auburn Staples, a junior in engineering, won this year’s event with a time of 24 minutes, 32 seconds.  Eric Mack, a junior in Parks Recreation Management, placed second with a time of 24 minutes, 58 seconds. Mike Aldrink, who ran as part of the Raleigh Running Outfitters team, placed third with a time of 28 minutes, 45 seconds. Of the challengers, 450 people successfully completed the Krispy Kreme Challenge.

The event organizers gathered at the Belltower at 5am to set up for the event. Spectators arrived at the Krispy Kreme store as early as 8:30am, eagerly anticipating the spectacle of nearly a thousand people eating donuts. Herman Dubose, the manager of the Krispy Kreme store, worked hard to produce a thousand dozen donuts and is very supportive of the event. The event organizers would like to thank all the spectators and volunteers who jumped in when help was needed at the store. An opening ceremony that featured N.C. State Chancellor James L. Oblinger started off the event, with the runners starting off at 9:30am. Raleigh Police Department, headed up by Lt. Paula O’Neal, closed off the roads for the Challenge. Cheers greeted the runners as they arrived at the store, received their donuts, and started to gulp them down. The overall reaction by the crowd at the store and the Belltower was one of excitement and fun.

The event organizers would like to thank all of our sponsors, especially Raleigh Running Outfitters, for their generosity.  This event would not have been possible without the huge support we received from the Raleigh community.  Check our website www.krispykremechallenge.com for results, pictures, and (when available) information on Krispy Kreme Challenge 2008.
